The Monkey and the Starfish

I read about starfish. What a beautiful word! I’ve been watching Man Ray’s films lately. Among them, one with a starfish called ‘L’étoile de mer’, (‘The Starfish’) from 1928. Man Ray’s inspiration was a poem by Robert Desnos.

Vous ne rêvez pas. You are not dreaming. Among the lines of this poem. How to know this? If we are dreaming or not?

So apparently the starfish is a symbol of lost love. Then I watched the movie ‘Chinatown’, and there the character, the one who is later murdered, goes to the ocean shore and picks up a starfish just like that. And now I’m looking on the internet to see if anyone has written on this topic already. Is it important for the interpretation of the film, the character…. I think it’s important. He looks at the ocean with the starfish in his hand. Somehow I’m moved by that. I also read that the starfish symbolises infinite divine love, not of this world. But also intuition, alertness, brilliance. Does he know what is going to happen?

So I made a collage with a monkey and a starfish. Because monkeys play the leading role in my collages lately.
